National Walk to Work Day

Date When Celebrated: First Friday in April. U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy G. Thompson declared the first National Walk to Work Day as April 2, 2004. With obesity and sedentary lifestyles growing at an alarming rate, National Walk to Work Day was initiated to draw attention to the need to get out and exercise, and to get in shape. On this day, Americans are encouraged to walk to work. If you can’t walk to work, take a walk during lunch time, or another time of the day. The goal is to walk 30 minutes a day. Health officials are hoping this will encourage people to add a 30 minute walk to their daily lives. Health officials, medical agencies, and medical organizations around the country state that a 30 minute walk will significantly improve you health. The benefits are many, including lower weight, less chance of heart disease, less risk of diabetes, and much more. This translates to a longer and healthier life. Unmentioned in other articles, is the emotional and mental benefits of walking. Walking is relaxing and peaceful. If you walk in a park, or along a waterfront, it can be captivating. March 17 Saint Patrick’s day is in honor of the Patron Saint of Ireland, who brought Christianity to the Emerald Isles, as Ireland is known. It is truly a day of celebrating Irish history, ancestry, traditions and customs. Saint Patrick’s’ Day has many symbols and traditions, from shamrocks and leprechauns, to green beer and Corned Beef and Cabbage. Saint Patrick’s Day parades are popular in many cities around the U.S. Interestingly, the first St. Patrick’s Day parade did not take place in Ireland. It took place in New York City, in 1762. International (Working) Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is sponsored worldwide by the United Nations. However, the UN did not originate this special celebration. The roots of this celebration goes back to the late 1800’s and early 1900s. It grew from women’s socialist movements and early women’s trade union groups.

The first International Women’s Day was held March 19, 1911. Women socialists and trade unions held an earlier Women’s Day on the last Sunday in February, 1908. The event grew from there, and has been celebrated annually since. The focus is upon women workers, and advancing women’s rights in the workforce, politics and society

Mardi Gras – Fat Tuesday

March 1, 2022 It’s time to party it up, and ….eat!! Fat Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday. It is also known as Mardi Gras Day or Shrove Day. It is a day when people eat all they want of everything and anything they want as the following day is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of a long fasting period for Christians. In addition to fasting, Christians also give up something special that they enjoy. So, Fat Tuesday is a celebration and the opportunity to enjoy that favorite food or snack that you give up for the long Lenten season. Nowhere on the planet is Fat Tuesday celebrated more than on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. The day is celebrated with festivities and parades and of course much food and drink. While in New Orleans, a big tradition is in wearing Mardi Gras beads and giving them to others. And tradition requires that if a guy gives a girl some beads, she has to do something for him…..this can be just loads of fun……… Did You Know? On Bourbon street in New Orleans, store owners coat poles and columns with Vaseline to keep wild and rowdy revelers from climbing them (and perhaps falling). In addition to being called Mardi Gras Day and Fat Tuesday, it is also called Fastnacht Day. Pennsylvania Dutch country, and other areas with large German populations, refer to it as Fastnacht Day.

Oscar Night

February 27, 2022 The Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences awards the Oscars every year for the very best in Motion Pictures over the past year. While there are many awards ceremonies over the year, the Oscars are the most coveted. Many people make a television party for the evening, preparing foods and snacks, boning up on the nominees, and friendly guessing and betting as to who will be the winners. Historical facts of past Oscars and winners become popular “Did you Know” conversations in work, on radio talk shows and at home.

People watch the awards to see what the actors and actresses will wear as much as they do to see who wins. The next day there will be lists and talk about the best dresses, the worst dressed, and the least dressed.

Ferris Wheel Day

This holiday is always held on February 14. Can you imagine a carnival or festival without a ferris wheel? Neither can I. We have George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. a civil engineer, to thank. In 1893, he made the first Ferris Wheel for the World’s Columbian Exhibition in Chicago. The purpose of this day is obvious… to celebrate the birthday of this great inventor and to enjoy his invention. The trouble is, there aren’t many carnivals, amusement parks or fairgrounds operating in mid-February in North America. You may have to settle with enjoying old photos of trips to a fair or amusement park. Origin of Ferris Wheel Day: Ferris Wheel Day commemorates the birthday of George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr., the creator of the first Ferris Wheel.

Austria, a country in love with their Ferris Wheels, also claims to have created this day. Their claim is that this date was chosen because in Austria this is historically the most weather friendly day of the year.

This holiday is always on February 10. Umbrella Day is in honor of one of the world’s most invaluable inventions. On a rainy day, we are sure glad that someone was smart enough to invent it. You can use it for protection from snow and sleet. It’s also increasingly popular to use umbrellas to shade ourselves from harmful UV radiation, and the heat of the sun. Umbrellas come in all sorts of sizes, colors, shapes, and, designs. Businesses and organizations use them for advertising, placing their company name or logo on them. The smallest umbrellas fit inside a purse or glove compartment. Huge golf umbrellas are popular sizes. And, don’t forget lawn and beach umbrellas. Ultimately, there’s an umbrella or two, made just for you. Celebrate Umbrella Day in a couple of ways. First, make sure your umbrella is handy. Second, use it, or walk around with it. Bubble Gum Day

First Friday in February. Today is Bubble Gum Day. On this day, kids bring 50 cents to school, and donate it to a good cause. In exchange, they can chew bubble gum in school on this day. The school selects in advance, what cause the donations will go to. Ruth Spiro, the creator, wanted to have a day where kids can simply participate in donating, without constantly selling things. She says that since its creation, Bubble Gum Day has become a sweet success! Bubble Gum Day was originally established for schools. But, libraries, clubs and community groups can and do participate. Even businesses are encouraged to hold a Bubble Gum Day event. The date of this event was established on the first Friday of February, rather than a set date. This is so it will occur on a school day. Some websites, who have not researched this day, erroneously report it on a fixed date. We hope you have a successful fundraiser on Bubble Gum Day. This special day exists to give all Spunky Old Broads (S.O.B.) a day to recognize their importance, and to celebrate themselves and their accomplishments. It is also a perfect day for the young ladies among us an opportunity to begin planning and preparing to become a Spunky Old Broad someday. When thinking about what an S.O. B. should be, one thinks of: successful, independent, self-reliant, smart, intelligent, outgoing and out-spoken, resourceful, bold, brave, and anything but shy. Spunky Old Broads Day Slogan: Women are like fine wine. They get better with age. What do you do on this day? According to the originator “Although I am the Spunky Old Broad, generally for women it means Spunky, Open and Brave. I think that says it all.” As for you guys out there, you should be supportive and understanding of course, and rather than criticize, it might be great to appreciate them for who they are. Among many other things, Dr. Gayle Carson, the originator of this day, is author of “How to Be an S.O.B–A Spunky Old Broad Who Kicks Butt.” It’s a “must read” for all spunky old broads, and anyone who aspires to be one. Having just one day to celebrate being spunky old broads is hardly enough. Dr. Carson turned February into Spunky Old Broads Month. She also picks a Spunky Old Broad of the Year.
